Impulse response and step response are two fundamental ways to characterize a system. While they are closely related, they provide different insights into system behavior.

Concept

As Δt (pulse width) → 0, the pulse becomes and impulse, and the pulse response becomes the impulse response. The impulse response is the most fundamental - once you know it, you can derive the response to any input.

The impulse response h(t) is defined as the output of a system when the input is a Dirac delta function
